The Value of Privately Protected Areas for Australia's Woodland Bird Community

Join us for a special webinar with Clare Bracey on the importance of privately protected land to help our woodland bird populations thrive.

Australia’s temperate woodlands are among the most heavily cleared and fragmented ecosystems within the country, and woodland remnants primarily occur on private land within landscapes dominated by agriculture. Temperate woodland birds are one group of fauna that rely on these woodlands for survival, but are threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.

Effectively protecting and managing the remaining habitat for woodland birds is critical for their ongoing conservation. These species play a vital role as pollinators, seed disperses and controllers of insect populations.

Whilst there is much being done for woodland bird conservation, a major knowledge gap concerns the on-ground effectiveness of management actions on private land, including privately protected areas, which are increasingly used to support biodiversity.

Clare's PhD research addressed this gap by comparing the woodland bird richness, abundance and community condition between protected and unprotected private land. The findings reveal that privately protected areas support higher woodland bird richness, abundance and community condition; however, there is large variation in how private land is being managed. Overall, the key message is that protection and management on private land matters for woodland birds.

Clare completed her PhD at Monash University looking into the benefits of private land conservation for the temperate woodland bird community. Her passion for birds and private land conservation was sparked during this PhD work, where she spent plenty of time on conservation covenants in New South Wales. Clare now works at Trust for Nature, where she gets to continue meeting amazing landholders and visiting lovely properties in north-west Victoria.

We have many more fantastic expert webinars coming up this year, so be sure to keep an eye out.

Our webinars book out quickly - so make sure to register today. If you're no longer able to attend, please do us a favour and cancel your registration. We will send the recording to our whole email list, so there's no need to register just to receive the recording afterwards.
