Over 20 years of caring for our land

What Trentham Landcare do

Michael Keaney - restoration.jpg

Revegetation and weed removal have been key aspects of our work. This has included willow removal along the Coliban River near Enders Bridge. We access grants, arrange consultants and contractors and lead working bees. Our projects and events have involved multiple people from diverse perspectives including ecologist Damien Cook, birder and science writer Tanya Loos, and pest eradication expert Brad Blake.

History of Landcare in Trentham

BarryElliot.jpg

The Landcare movement in Victoria was launched in 1986, but grass roots groups working to care for land go back to as early as the 1950’s. Trentham and District Landcare was formed at a meeting of 36 interested people on 5 March 1997. We acknowledge in particular the contribution made by local legends Barry Elliot who was the first president, and Gael Elliot who has provided invaluable advice to the group on the flora and fauna of the Trentham region since its inception.

Spray Trailer for member hire

We have a spray trailer available for hire at $20 per day. The trailer holds a 500 litre drum and 2 long hoses allowing for large areas of blackberry, broom, thistle etc. to be sprayed by 2 people, simultaneously. A chemical user’s course is recommended before hiring to ensure knowledge of poisons, weeds and general safety. After use, before returning to 1010 Farm, rinse out the drum and re fill the petrol tank.

To book: the spray trailer please send a message via our contact page. (Forms are in the box on the trailer, they must be signed and details of poison used provided).

Rabbit-warren smoker for member hire

We have rabbit warren smoker for hire at $20 per day. This item runs on 50:1 two stroke engine oil: 50 parts petrol to 1 part oil. Regular baby oil is used to create the smoke and is sweet smelling. This equipment reveals how many entrances/exits there are to a warren…more than you think!

Tablets, to send rabbits to sleep painlessly, are available at Elders or Landmark. A chemical user’s licence is necessary to purchase these tablets. Use a ute or trailer to collect the tablets as they cannot be transported inside a car. Full face mask and heavy duty gloves must be used when handling these tablets.
